12 South - The heart of the Outer Banks is Hwy 12 South that runs from Nags Head to Sea Level. Long stretches of it are uninhabited and undeveloped with the ocean on one side and the sound on the other. This is the view as you leave the civilization of Ocracoke Village and head north, the darkness can be overwhelming.
