I have scars, not the kind you can see but the kind that are hidden deep down. A lifetime of standing the thin blue line that separates civilized society from the chaos beyond has left scars on my soul. I’ve been a law enforcement officer for over 25 years now and in that time I have seen things I can’t unsee, heard things I can’t unhear and felt things I can’t unfeel.
One of the reasons I’m drawn to night sky photography, especially images of the Milky Way, is the healing effect that it has on my soul. Not only are the images humbling but the solace you can find on dark beaches, deserted fields and mountain tops helps to undo some of the damage that has been done. I know that I will never fully heal but the images I can share go along way towards restoring my humanity.
